FinTech - What is it and why should students get qualified in it?

For the first time in 2020, the University of Rennes1 in France will be launching the Master FinTech programme. This is basically a Master programme in Financial Technology where the focus is on acquiring expertise in the field of Data Management. In today’s article we are going to take a look at who can apply for the MA Fintech programme and also the main reasons why students should get this qualification.

Why FinTech?

There are various reasons as to why a career in Financial Technology can be fruitful however, the main reasons are the following:

  1. Data Management, especially in Financial Technology, is useful for a wide range of fields and sectors
  2. Financial Technology is the Future, whatever the field your students are interested in working in
  3. FinTech is useful for business but also for personal finances
  4. FinTech is useful to help companies, business owners and consumers to manage their financial operations, processes, and lives more efficiently by utilizing specialized software and algorithms.

Where does a career in FinTech lead?

Apart from the fact that the Master in FinTech Programme opens up many career doors to students, as a University, the EIT Digital Department within the University of Rennes1, will ensure that students will have the unique opportunity to work together with the industry at early stages of their studies through company internships. This involvement will allow them to know the financial and technological needs of the public and private sectors, and positively impact the ICT ecosystem. In case students prefer to follow an academic track, they will be able to do research in major industrial R&D centres as well as to complete a Ph.D. programme.

Who can apply for this programme?

Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent. Applicants from the fields of Economics or Administrative Science can apply as long as they can demonstrate a strong formation or experience in Information Technology (IT). Additionally, candidates should present an innovative technological project to develop throughout the program. 

Lastly, proficiency in English must be certified by an international test (TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, etc.).

How long is the MA in FinTech Programme?

The Fintech program is two years long and can be taken in two different European universities of the consortium. This programme is being offered by a group of universities from around Europe and this gives students the unique opportunity to spend time in two different universities and in two different countries. The universities that form part of this programme are the following: 

  • University of Rennes 1, in France; 
  • Alto, in Finland; 
  • ELTE, in Hungary; 
  • KTH, in Sweden, 
  • Nice UCA, in France; 
  • POLIMI, in Italy; 
  • Trento, in Italy; 
  • UPM, in Spain. 

The student can, for example, start the entry year at the University of Rennes 1 and finish the exit year, for example, at the University of Trento. Or alternatively, the student can start the entry year, for example, in ELTE and finish the exit year at the University of Rennes 1, and so on…
