Sustainable Wednesday: Building a Greener Future in International Education

  Publisher : Stephanie Clark   07 May 2025 07:00

The international education sector faces unique sustainability challenges, from carbon-intensive student travel to resource-heavy campus operations. Yet, our industry also has remarkable potential to shape future leaders with sustainability mindsets. Here we explore why sustainability matters in international education and how schools can meaningfully contribute.

Why is sustainability important in international education?

International education creates significant environmental impacts through travel, accommodation, and campus operations. However, our sector also educates future decision-makers who will shape global sustainability initiatives. By embracing eco-friendly practices, schools not only reduce their environmental footprint but also show their commitment to values increasingly important to eco-conscious students and parents.

How educational institutions can be more sustainable

There are a number of ways schools and universities in our industry can implement environmental practices. Here are some considerations:

Start with energy-efficient campuses

Assess your energy use and identify opportunities for reduction. Simple measures like LED lighting, improved insulation, and programmable thermostats can significantly decrease energy consumption.

Encourage sustainable travel

While international travel is inherent to our industry, schools can mitigate impacts by encouraging longer stays, combining trips, and offsetting carbon emissions through reputable programs. Online courses can also reduce the need for some travel while still maintaining cross-cultural learning opportunities.

Integrate sustainability into curriculum

Embed sustainability concepts across disciplines rather than treating it as a standalone subject. Encourage project-based learning where students address real sustainability challenges on campus or in local communities, and incorporate environmental discussions in language classes.

Educational institutions have both the responsibility and opportunity to demonstrate sustainability leadership. By implementing practical changes and nurturing sustainability values in students, schools and universities can help drive the global transition to more eco-friendly practices.
