Murfreesboro native reflects on transfer to Tennessee Tech: ‘Everyone was just so welcoming’

For Murfreesboro native Drew Ewers, transferring to Tennessee Tech University felt like coming home. His parents both attended Tech, and growing up hearing their stories made the university feel like part of his own journey before he even set foot on campus.

“My parents met at Tech, and it’s been a big deal to me my whole life. It has always been a goal to be able to come here and get a degree in engineering just like my mom did,” he explained.

When Ewers was able to visit campus, his decision to enroll at Tech was solidified. The one-on-one tour gave him a firsthand look into Tech’s Department of Mechanical Engineering – Ewers’ intended major – and the spaces where he would spend much of his time.

“My experience was really good,” he said. “I really liked how they split the tour up into majors. I got to tour Brown Hall, and what stood out the most was all the things available to mechanical engineering students, especially the shop downstairs.”

Transferring can sometimes bring uncertainty, but for Ewers, the transition from Motlow State Community College to Tennessee Tech was a seamless process. “My transfer so far has been pretty smooth,” he said. “Everyone was just so welcoming. My roommates helped support me, and my professors being so understanding definitely helped.”

Between getting started on his major-specific classes and enjoying campus life, he’s quickly found his rhythm at Tech.

“The opportunities and community have been a welcome change,” he explained. “Here at Tech, it’s easy to find a place to meet with groupmates and get things done. There’s always something going on, which is really nice.”

Ewers’ favorite part about being at Tech so far has been diving into classes that connect directly to his future goals. “I feel like I’m finally making good progress on getting myself ready for my future career,” he said.

For students considering a transfer to Tech, Ewers has simple but encouraging advice. “Don’t be intimidated,” he shared. “I was nervous before transferring, but there was nothing to worry about …  the professors really help you understand the material.”

Prospective undergraduate transfer students in the U.S. interested in following Ewers’ path to Tech can take advantage of a waived application fee from now until Oct. 24 in honor of National Transfer Student Week. Learn more and apply today at www.tntech.edu/transfer.
