Construction is one of the most visible engines of the Maltese economy, and one of the most demanding. As projects grow larger and regulation tighter, the sector needs more than skilled hands on site; it needs supervisors, surveyors and managers who can plan, cost and lead the work to a professional standard. IDEA College has built its construction portfolio to develop exactly those people, providing a connected pathway that begins with a practical, site-level certificate and rises all the way to a master’s degree in construction management.
As with the college’s other routes, the point is progression. A learner can step on where it suits them, (on site, in a technical role, or already partway through a career) and gain a recognised qualification at each stage, and keep building toward professional and managerial roles.
The pathway offers two practical entry points. The Pre-Tertiary Certificate in Excavation Plant Supervision (MQF Level 4, 30 ECTS) is aimed squarely at the site itself, developing the supervisory skills needed to run excavation and plant work safely and efficiently. Alongside it, the Undergraduate Certificate in Site Management (Level 5, 30 ECTS) takes learners a step further into the co-ordination and oversight of construction sites. Both are accessible starting points that turn hands-on experience into a recognised qualification.
From there, the pathway opens into its academic core: quantity surveying, the discipline of measuring, costing and managing the commercial side of construction. Learners progress through the Diploma in Quantity Surveying (60 ECTS) and the Higher Diploma in Quantity Surveying (120 ECTS) before completing the BSc in Quantity Surveying (180 ECTS), a full honours-level degree. Because each qualification builds on the last, a learner who starts at diploma level is always carrying credit forward rather than beginning again.
Taken together, the qualifications form one continuous ascent from a practical site certificate to a specialist master’s degree:
The pathway culminates in the Master of Science in Construction Management (90 ECTS), the point at which a learner steps up from technical or site-level work into the leadership of projects and teams. It builds the planning, commercial and management expertise that main contractors and developers increasingly demand of the people running their sites and contracts.
It is worth being clear about how this works in practice. Candidates who already meet the entry requirements can enrol directly onto the master’s, there is no need to work up through the earlier qualifications first. The longer, laddered route is intended for a different learner: someone who does not yet hold the qualifications but wants to build a career in the sector, and who can therefore start lower down and progress, step by step, to exactly the same destination. The ladder is there for those who need it, not a hurdle for those who don’t.
