Sustainable Wednesday: Making the Most of International Environment Days in Your School

  Publisher : Stephanie Clark   02 July 2025 07:30

The environmental calendar offers countless opportunities to connect learning with global awareness, helping students develop language skills and environmental consciousness. Here are some ideas on how to make the most of key environmental dates throughout the academic year.

Spring celebrations

World Wildlife Day (March 3rd) can engage students through wildlife conservation stories from around the globe. International students can talk about endangered species from their countries, building vocabulary around conservation terminology whilst developing presentation skills. Consider organising zoo visits or wildlife documentary screenings followed by classroom debates about conservation priorities.

World Water Day (March 22nd) is the perfect time for cross-cultural discussions about water usage patterns worldwide. Students can compare water conservation practices from their home countries whilst practising comparative language structures. Create interactive presentations where students research and present water challenges facing different regions—combining geography, environmental science, and language skills.

Major environmental moments

Earth Day (April 22nd) remains the most recognisable environmental celebration, with maximum student engagement opportunities. Consider getting students to create presentations about environmental initiatives from their home countries. This celebrates cultural diversity and helps build language skills around environmental topics.

World Environment Day (June 5th) is also one of the biggest international days for the environment, led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It’s an excellent opportunity for end-of-term projects. Perhaps students can do groupwork to develop environmental action plans for their host city, practising future tense structures and proposal writing whilst engaging with local eco challenges.

Autumn awareness

World Clean-up Day (third Saturday in September) is great for hands-on learning experiences. Organise community clean-up events where students practise imperative language structures whilst contributing to local environmental efforts. Document the experience through photo journals and post these to social media to spread awareness.

Environmental days transform abstract language learning into meaningful, globally-relevant experiences. Why not take a look at Green Standard Schools’ environmental calendar and pick out a few dates to focus on in your school?
