After seeing Australia boom with increasing numbers of foreign language students, Canada has decided to jump on the bandwagon.
Canada holds an advantage in that it can offer both English and French in its foreign language programmes. There are now around 130,000 students traveling to Canada annually to study abroad.
In order to get potential students leaning towards Canada, the student visa application process has been simplified. Peter Milliken, speaker of the Parliament’s House of Commons stated, “We want to make things easier for the students and this is why we have simplified the student visa norms. It is much easier to get one now and they can study in Canada at much lower costs,” he said.
The government is currently concentrating most on the growing Indian influx of study-abroad students. Gurbax Singh Malhi, a Canadian Member of Parliament of Punjabi origin, recently informed Canadian educational institutions: “There are at least 23 community colleges across Canada where students can apply directly instead of routing their applications to the universities”.
