New language school group is formed
Three small but well-known language schools in the UK and Ireland are pleased to announce that they will now be working together as part of the newly formed - Language in Group. Kevin Kelly of Annalivia School in Dublin, Stuart Rubenstein of Language in London and Margie Barker of Totnes School of English are combining their years of experience to work together to guarantee the continued excellence of their schools into 2010 and beyond. Glasgow School of English opens sister school in Edinburgh
Glasgow School of English opens a sister school, Global School of English, in Edinburgh in July 2010. Japan sticks with invitational programme bringing in foreign language teachers
In a recent review, Japanese officials had questioned the status of a government-funded project recruiting foreign language instructors to Japan, but the CULCON panel seeks to persuade them otherwise. The Cultural and Educational Interchange, known as CULCON, gathered this month in Washington to discuss the importance of educational investment for Japan. New admissions rules to boost opportunities for overseas students at UK Universities
International students planning to study at UK universities can now use English language certificates to gain UCAS Tariff points – in the same way as they have traditionally done with ‘A’ Levels. Malta’s enrollment figures up but nothing to boast

Pearson partners with Helen Doron Group
Last week Pearson and Helen Doron Educational Group announced a partnership to prepare test takers for Pearson's tests of English language proficiency. 5 Questions - Interview with Walter Denz, President of IALC
Schools & Agents attended the IALC Workshop in Galway 29 April – 2 May 2010, where we had the opportunity to meet with Walter Denz for an interview. Dublin school teams up with University of Cambridge
Dublin’s English Academy has teamed up with a department of Cambridge University to offer computer-based language exams for thousands of students each year learning English. One closes down - Another reopens
Last week the Spanish school chain Escuela Internacional announced they closed down. The group offered Spanish courses at 2 schools in Spain and at 5 partner schools in Costa Rica and Mexico. Obviously many agents were affected by this decision. Further south another school reopens...after only two weeks! Shane Global Cape Town in South Africa closed its doors in March, but with an investment from the current landlord, the former employee Gina Pardenwachter decided to reopen the school as Cape English Language School.

New American boarding school in Paris!

Vietnam Adopts the TOEIC® Test
Educational Testing Service (ETS) and its ETS Preferred Network office, IIG Vietnam, in collaboration with the Vietnam Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA), announces the use of the TOEIC® test within Vietnam's vocational training system. Starting in 2010, the TOEIC test will be used to measure students' English proficiency to guide placement decisions. Over the next two years, vocational schools and colleges will also begin administering the TOEIC test as an exit requirement for graduation. "English-language education has long been an integral part of the vocational curriculum in Vietnam," said Doan Hong Nam, President of IIG Vietnam. "We are excited about this partnership with MOLISA as it will enable Vietnam's vocational system to measure and reward success while establishing a standard of English-language education." 24% more educators at sold out Moscow Workshop
The ICEF Moscow Workshop sold out this year with a 24% increase in the number of educators at the event. Held from March 26 – 28, representatives from 105 educational institutions around the world met with 191 top quality agents from Russia, Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus. Overall participants were highly satisfied, 98% rating the workshop as good or excellent (30% and 68% respectively), the two highest categories.

New General Manager at LAL South Africa
Shaun Fitzhenry took over the position of General Manager at LAL Cape Town in December last year, following Karl Rutti's retirement from the language travel industry after many successful years in Cape Town. Shaun joins us after four years as owner/manager of a language school he established in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Prior to this he spent five years teaching English to business people in Hamburg, Germany, a year in Taiwan teaching teenagers and pre-schoolers, and two years as an accredited tour guide in Cape Town. He holds a BA in English and History, a postgraduate teachers’ diploma, and spent 12 years teaching English as a second and first language in the South African state school system. Shaun is South African born and bred, and grew up on a farm in the arid Karoo region. He is passionate about the country and committed to its future. For the time-being his wife and children remain in Port Elizabeth while he commutes between the two cities. He has tickets for various 2010 World Cup games…but these are not for sale!

Everyone’s Eyes on South Africa
For the first time in history, the FIFA World Cup will reach South African soil. On June 11, 2010 the opening football match between their own South African team (commonly known as Bafana Bafana) and Mexico will be cheered on by thousands of extremely excited fans. Just imagine: a country that received democratic independence only 16 years ago is hosting what many people would refer to as the biggest international sports tournament in the world. Even South Africa’s president, Jacob Zuma, announced that 2010 would be the most important year for the country since its first democratic elections in 1994. So perhaps the word excited does not do the South African citizens and fans justice. Ecstatic would be more appropriate.

New Maltese tourist tax affects language schools and their students
With effect from the 1 April 2010 a new Government tax will be levied on tourist accommodation in Malta. Service providers, including language schools which often offer accommodation, has to collect €0.50 for every night a student spend in Malta. Even though the tax might not affect tourists and students much,it will for sure be a hassle for language schools since they have already printed their brochures and price lists – Obviously without this information. European language Survey top of the agenda in Germany

Eight years of growth sees the largest Berlin Workshop ever
The ICEF Berlin Workshop grew for the eighth consecutive year, making the 2009 workshop in Berlin the largest ICEF event ever. Educators from 451 institutions and 32 Work & Travel providers met a record 860 ICEF-screened agents from 92 countries around the world. Overall, 99% of workshop participants rated the event as good or excellent, the highest possible ratings.

Browns English Language School opened million dollar Brisbane campus
After six years on the Gold Coast the founders and siblings Niesha and Richard Brown now opened the doors to their second school in Brisbane. Mr Brown said to goldcoast.com.au that no expanse has been spared in the design, fit-out and interior. It featured marble finishes, LCD televisions, the latest computers and IT, library, expansive balconies with views across the city, modern custom-made furniture, kitchen and student area. Participant satisfaction high at the ICEF China Workshop 2009
Participants at this year’s ICEF China Workshop enjoyed excellent networking opportunities, as well as a comprehensive seminar programme, educator training and agent certification. Held October 14 - 16 in Beijing, educators from 93 institutions in 18 countries met with 161 ICEF-screened agents from 36 countries around the world (47% from China). Overall, 96% of workshop participants rated the event as good or excellent, the highest possible ratings.

Hungary bottom-listed in a Eurostat survey about language skills
An average just over one third in the European Union speak no foreign language. A survey by Eurostat shows that three-quarters of Hungarians speak no foreign language which places them at the bottom of all EU countires. One factor could be that their language bears little relation to other European tongues. Read more here

Portsmouth Language College opened new branch in Southampton

Australian Gov. suspends 200 agents from hosting online student visa appl.
Association of Australian Education Representatives in India (AAERI) has welcomed the decision by Australian Government of suspending almost 200 agents operating in a number of countries from hosting online student visa applications because of evidence of fraud or poor approval rates.
