WDS Launches Business English Online
The language school and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) software developer WDS (William Dobbs Sprachen), based in Winterthur, Switzerland has expanded its range of educational programs and has entered into the online learning market with the launch of ‘Business English Online’. This program is the first in a series of programs designed to help learners acquire and improve their Business English skills online. Exercises include business vocabulary, grammar as used in business contexts, practice in writing mails, letters, offers, memos etc, and contextualized listening.

Course in Focus: Medical English

New General Manager at LAL South Africa
Shaun Fitzhenry took over the position of General Manager at LAL Cape Town in December last year, following Karl Rutti's retirement from the language travel industry after many successful years in Cape Town. Shaun joins us after four years as owner/manager of a language school he established in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Prior to this he spent five years teaching English to business people in Hamburg, Germany, a year in Taiwan teaching teenagers and pre-schoolers, and two years as an accredited tour guide in Cape Town. He holds a BA in English and History, a postgraduate teachers’ diploma, and spent 12 years teaching English as a second and first language in the South African state school system. Shaun is South African born and bred, and grew up on a farm in the arid Karoo region. He is passionate about the country and committed to its future. For the time-being his wife and children remain in Port Elizabeth while he commutes between the two cities. He has tickets for various 2010 World Cup games…but these are not for sale!

Schools & Agents Celebrates Two Years
On the 3rd of March two years ago S&A was launched. The founder, Marcus Pettersson says: “It was with mixed feelings we celebrated that day – exhaustion, satisfaction and expectation are three words which explains it quite well! The website was launched with around 20 test schools and a few pre-registered agencies. Two years later we have just over 300 member schools and nearly 350 member agents.”

TESOL issues joint statement with AAIEP & UCIEP
Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc. (TESOL), the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP), and the Consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs (UCIEP) announce the publication of a joint position statement on governance for intensive English programs (IEPs). Developed in response to recent trends at IEPs on some university campuses, the statement calls for transparency in university governance by administrators, as well as the full, active participation of IEPs in campus governance.

Everyone’s Eyes on South Africa
For the first time in history, the FIFA World Cup will reach South African soil. On June 11, 2010 the opening football match between their own South African team (commonly known as Bafana Bafana) and Mexico will be cheered on by thousands of extremely excited fans. Just imagine: a country that received democratic independence only 16 years ago is hosting what many people would refer to as the biggest international sports tournament in the world. Even South Africa’s president, Jacob Zuma, announced that 2010 would be the most important year for the country since its first democratic elections in 1994. So perhaps the word excited does not do the South African citizens and fans justice. Ecstatic would be more appropriate.

New Maltese tourist tax affects language schools and their students
With effect from the 1 April 2010 a new Government tax will be levied on tourist accommodation in Malta. Service providers, including language schools which often offer accommodation, has to collect €0.50 for every night a student spend in Malta. Even though the tax might not affect tourists and students much,it will for sure be a hassle for language schools since they have already printed their brochures and price lists – Obviously without this information. Eight years of growth sees the largest Berlin Workshop ever
The ICEF Berlin Workshop grew for the eighth consecutive year, making the 2009 workshop in Berlin the largest ICEF event ever. Educators from 451 institutions and 32 Work & Travel providers met a record 860 ICEF-screened agents from 92 countries around the world. Overall, 99% of workshop participants rated the event as good or excellent, the highest possible ratings.

Browns English Language School opened million dollar Brisbane campus
After six years on the Gold Coast the founders and siblings Niesha and Richard Brown now opened the doors to their second school in Brisbane. Mr Brown said to goldcoast.com.au that no expanse has been spared in the design, fit-out and interior. It featured marble finishes, LCD televisions, the latest computers and IT, library, expansive balconies with views across the city, modern custom-made furniture, kitchen and student area. Participant satisfaction high at the ICEF China Workshop 2009
Participants at this year’s ICEF China Workshop enjoyed excellent networking opportunities, as well as a comprehensive seminar programme, educator training and agent certification. Held October 14 - 16 in Beijing, educators from 93 institutions in 18 countries met with 161 ICEF-screened agents from 36 countries around the world (47% from China). Overall, 96% of workshop participants rated the event as good or excellent, the highest possible ratings.

Hungary bottom-listed in a Eurostat survey about language skills
An average just over one third in the European Union speak no foreign language. A survey by Eurostat shows that three-quarters of Hungarians speak no foreign language which places them at the bottom of all EU countires. Student buried by quake – Rescued after 40 hours
The Foreign Language School of Prayoga collapsed on the 30th September when Sumatra was hit by a 7.6-magnitude quake. Ratna Kurniasari Virgo, 19 who were studying at the college was buried under the rubble but was miraculously rescued 40 hours later, without any life-threatening injuries. Read the full story here

Oxford – City of Dreaming Spires
The University is very much at the heart of this 'city of dreaming spires'. From the top of St Mary's Church tower you can gaze out across the world-famous colleges – many of which date back over eight hundred years and their mediaeval architecture is breathtaking. One of the most famous is Christ Church. It is Oxford's largest college and provided inspiration for Lewis Carroll's 'Alice in Wonderland'. Int. students' spending at English language schools continues to increase
According to the English Language Providers survey, international students at English language schools spent $142 million on tuition and related fees in the year ended March 2009, Statistics New Zealand said 5th August. This spending is $20.7 million higher than in the year ended March 2008, and is the third consecutive yearly increase.

The 45th Slovak Summer School commences in Bratislava
The figures released by the Studia Academia Slovaca (SAS), reveals a growing interest among international students towards the Slovak language. The Slovak language academy which has been successfully conducting summer schools every year, has recorded a registration of 170 people from across 33 countries, this year. Czech Language Schools cringing under the financial crunch
The Czech Republic which had seen a big boom in the language teaching industry since the 1990s is now buckling under the pressure of the global economic crisis. With almost every major street in the Czech cities housing their own language school, the language school sector had flourished immensely over the past two decades. However, sources report that nearly 30 per cent of language schools of the country will be forced to shut down, following the financial crisis.

Fire at Malaca Instituto
On Saturday last week Malaca Instituto, a Spanish language school in Malaga, had quite a serious fire at their on-site residence. Despite the rules and signs a couple of young students were smoking, fell asleep and set fire to their room. The school's maintenance and cleaning staff worked all weekend and the school were operating totally normally on Monday. There were no injuries but one totally destroyed bedroom and a bit of smoke smell near it.

Ireland witnessing a slump in English language education
Overseas students are not choosing Ireland for their English language studies as readily as they did in the past. The country has seen a 30 per cent drop in international students. Several schools have reported a 50 per cent drop in international enrolment, according to David O’Grady, chief executive of Marketing English in Ireland (MEI). New York Embassy school renovation is now complete.
The school takes up 2 floors of our building in central Manhattan and they have just completed the work on the 6th floor. Work on the 5th floor began in May and will be completed in June.

ESL teachers vote to unionize
Instructors at Pacific Language Institute (PLI) have voted overwhelmingly to join the Education and Training Employee's Association (ETEA), a union that represents post-secondary educators in British Columbia's private colleges and institutes. The vote to unionize was supervised by the Labour Relations Board. Over 90 percent of the PLI instructors voted to join ETEA.

The largest CELTA training centre in North America becomes IH New York
IHWO is delighted to announce a new affiliated school in the USA – IH New York. Originally called ‘Teaching House’, IH New York was set up as a school for excellence in TEFL teacher training. Saint George International has now launched the SGI Study Abroad scheme
Increasing numbers of British language learners are taking the opportunity to improve their language skills overseas. A break in sight for English language schools on the Gold Coast
English language school infrastructure charges will be re-evaluated by the Gold Coast City Council in Australia within the next two months. Currently, Gold Coast language schools fall into the same category as other educational institutions. Up until now, the infrastructure charges have been part of the planning policy for language schools, but many officials are pushing for more lenient numbers with the hope of drawing in more international students.

The Al Ain Fair - Working for the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia & Turkey
The Al Ain Fair was held at the InterContinental Al Ain Resort from Monday 20 to Thursday 23 April and brought together 33 accredited UK English language centres and 43 study abroad agents and educational consultants from key markets in the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia and Turkey, including Algeria, Armenia, Georgia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Libya, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan. The workshop was organised by the English Language Promotions Group, which comprises the British Council, English UK, UK Trade & Investment and VisitBritain.

Success for latest ICEF Workshops in Moscow and Auckland
ICEF has just completed two successful workshops in Moscow, Russia and Auckland, New Zealand. Maltese language schools gearing up to overcome the lull
Andrew Mangion, the President of the Federation of English Language Teaching Organisation of Malta and the Chief Executive Officer of the EC Malta language school, voiced concern about the tough summer ahead for the Maltese English Schools. He was speaking at a function welcoming the visiting Parliamentary Tourism Secretary, Dr Mario de Marco to the EC School in St Julians. Mr. Mangion said the tightening of the economic crisis across the globe has led to an inevitable lull in the language tourism industry.

New branch of English-Speaking Union to open shortly in Malta
Lord Hunt of Wirral, the Global Chairman of the English-Speaking Union (ESU), visited Malta to discuss the establishment of a new branch of ESU, for the islands. The ESU aims at popularizing the use of English in Malta to facilitate worldwide communication for the Maltese speaking population.

Eliminate bogus visas, not genuine applicants
The Tier 4 visa regulations came in three weeks ago and intend to end a scam in which thousands of foreigners enrolled at bogus colleges to work in Britain. So far, 2,100 establishments have been accredited and registered and around 460 rejected.

New General Manager of LAL USA
LAL is pleased to announce the appointment of Steve Johnson as the new General Manager of LAL USA from 15th April 2009. Mr Johnson was raised in Boston, Massachusetts and graduated from Lawrence University with a B.A. in History. He spent several years in San Diego, California as a high school English instructor and tennis coach, and completed a Master of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences from San Diego State University, with ESL Certification.

The arrests of two Korean Nationals have revealed an illegal immigration scam carried out under the pretext of a Duluth Language School. The two Gwinnet County residents have been charged in a case of forgery and fraud.

New Malvern House King’s Cross Centre
A leading London college, Malvern House, has chosen the King’s Cross area of London for their latest site in London. The purpose built centre will be within the recently completed Nido Hall of Residence and will accommodate 17 classrooms and full student facilities to teach over 600 adult students a day. It will be a replacement for the Trafalgar Centre where Malvern House opened its doors in June 2000.
